K=Kerri J=Jennifer
K: Do you know Miss Shelly Mann?
J: Of course. She was an American athlete. She got the Olympic gold medal.
K: But do you know she got polio?
J: Sorry, I have no idea. I know this disease affects the spinal cord and makes it difficult to move the body.
K: Yes. The doctor recognized she had this terrible disease when she was six years old. As the years went by, she gradually lost the power to move her fingers and toes, her arms and her legs.
J: It's too terrible.
K: She could hardly move any part of her body little by little.
J: This was a difficult situation for Shelly.
K: At the moment she could only do one thing that she tried to enter the swimming pool.
J: It was difficult work.
K: In water, she felt more equal to other children. Swimming soon became the most important part of her life.
J: It's great.
K: Shelly continued to work hard.
K: Shelly
J: Polio didn't really beat her.
K: She loved to swim, and loved to win. She worked hard without knowing it.
J: Did she experience the failure?
K: Sure. At the 1956 Olympics, she didn't even get a bronze of the 100 meters freestyle.
J: But I heard she reached and touched the gold of the 100m buterfly.
K: Yeah. When she received her medal, tears ran down her face.
